Senjski Rudnik, founded in 1853, is the oldest active brown coal mine in Serbia and the oldest preserved industrial heritage site.
In the unique industrial landscape, four facilities are used as parts of museum complex: Administration Building above Aleksandar’s Shaft, Mechanical Workshop, Museum of Coal Mining and Export Tower with steam engine, which was manufactured between 1871 and 1873. represents an unusual attraction. The engine is in very good condition and still moves the elevators which carry the miners up and down the 150-meter deep pit. The steam engine, which is one of a kind in the world and still functional, has been under the protection of the state and has been registered in the National Registry of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Serbia.
Museum of Coal Mining Senjski Rudnik is a unique technical museum which exhibits the items and presents the history of Senjski Rudnik. Permanent exhibition collection of Museum of Coal Mining consists of the collection of digging tools from classical antiquity and medieval period, mining lamps, measuring instruments, drilling tools, miniatures and models, coal excavation machines, manual digging tools, mining uniforms, medals and decorations, water barrels, geologic maps, photographs, archival material, works of art and ethnological collections.
