The uniqueness of Bar is reflected in the fact that it has five canyons that are ideal for an active holiday for tourists seeking adrenaline and untouched nature, which should not be entered without a guide.
The canyons are the hidden jewels of Mount Rumija, which with its massif separates the hinterland of the Adriatic Sea from the largest lake in the Balkans, Lake Skadar. Five canyons are rare even for continental cities, namely the Rikavac, Međureč, Vruća Rijeka river canyons, as well as the Nikezića potok and Perin potok canyons. For coastal cities, it is a curiosity.
There are also 16 mountain trails with a length of more than 150 km before your arrival on the Bar Riviera.
In addition to the more demanding mountain tours, walking tours are also organized through the olive groves of the Bar, which can be mastered by everyone, from 7 to 77 years of age. Near the Old Town there is the Džidžarin olive grove, where there are about 10,000 olive trees, of which over 1,000 trees are over 1,000 years old.
The olive tree is the symbol of Bar, and the only natural monument in the region is the Old Olive Tree, which bears witness to life in our area for over 2,240 years.
Few localities on the Bar Riviera record a constant increase in the number of tourists like the Old Town, in the foothills of Rumija. This is not without reason, because it is the largest open-air museum on the Adriatic, a large archaeological site – the “Montenegro Pompeii”, the only Old Town in the Mediterranean that was not built on the foam of the sea, but five kilometers from the coast.
The Old Town of Bar is probably the only area in Europe where all civilizations except Austria-Hungary have changed. How much history, secrets and legends are there in the area of four hectares, surrounded by walls, which was located on the caravan route that connected East and West… Explore the hidden treasures of the Old Town, which is on the waiting list for inclusion in UNESCO.
It is difficult to understand the complete offer of the Bar Riviera, because it is an inexhaustible source of beauty and contrast, in which the Skadar Lake National Park occupies a special place.
We have two coasts – sea and lake. On the Bar Riviera, there are 46 km of sea and 64 km of lake shores, to which belongs the rugged, insular part where there are monasteries from the Middle Ages – Beška, Starčevo, Moračnik…. When you take the panoramic route that connects two magical coasts – the sea and lake shores, in the town of Ostros there are the remains of the Prečista Krajina monastery, one of the oldest cultural monuments in this region, which is associated with the cult of St. Jovan Vladimir, the patron of the city of Bar. While listening to one of the most beautiful love stories, the legend of Vladimir and Kosara, the path takes you through a hundred-year-old chestnut forest and you can ask yourself – am I in the beauty of reality or a wonderful dream.
When you come to Bar from Serbia, you pass through Lake Skadar, an oasis of natural beauty, rich flora and fauna, a paradise for rare birds such as the curly pelican. In addition, there is a habitat for 280 species of birds, about 50 species of fish. Whether you are cruising, kayaking through “fields” of water lilies, fishing… both the island and marshy part of Lake Skadar has its own charm and a different experience throughout the seasons.
In the rural hinterland of Bar, there are excellent wineries and the far-known Vranac of Crmnica, which will immerse you in the gastronomic atmosphere of the specialties of local cuisine. We proudly suggest that you visit the village of Godinje in Crmnica, the first protected rural unit in Montenegro with the status of a cultural property, which is authentic due to its specific “house on house” architecture. It will be interesting when the tourist guide tells you why they chose this type of construction in the past and what connects these buildings.
In addition to natural and cultural attractions, the Bar Riviera has a tradition of tourist and agricultural festivals: Olive Festival, Wine Festival, Grape Harvest Festival, Koštanijada… as well as fun events – Summer with the Stars, so in the summer period the Touristic organization Bar organizes free concerts of popular singers and groups for tourists and the inhabitants of Bar.
