Niš is one of the most interesting historical destination in Serbia. While visiting the monuments and museums of Niš, you will hear incredible stories about emperors and heroes, stories about suffering, but also stories about courage that will not leave anyone indifferent.
Mediana is one of the most important Serbian Late Antiquity archeological sites, built at the beginning of IV century. It was constructed during the reign of emperor Constantine the Great. Today, Mediana is an archeological park where one can see remains of the villa with the peristyle with more than 1.000m2 of the incredible flour mosaics.
Niš fortress built by Ottomans at the begining of the 18th century is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved oriental buildings in the Central Balkans. The history of the fortification in this location began in the 1st century AD when Roman legions paved the way for a new civilization. Built both by Romans and Serbs, the fortress was razed and rebuilt several times until the Ottomans gave its final appearance in 1723.
The Skull Tower is a unique monument in the world that is visited by tens of thousands of visitors annually. It is the tower made of human skulls, built after the battle for liberation of Nis in 1809. This horrific monument was built as a warning to anyone rising against the Ottoman Empire. Many domestic and foreign websites recommend visiting the Skull Tower, and some of them rank it – in the top 5 dark tourism places in the world.
Čegar hill, 7 km from Niš, is the place where in 1809. the famous heroic act of Serbian duke Stevan Sinđelić took place. At the end of the battle for liberation of Nis, duke shot into a gun powder magazine, and the explosion killed Serbian insurgents and a large number of Ottoman soldiers. As a sign of revenge, the Ottomans built the Skull Tower from the skulls of fallen Serbian soldiers.
In the authentic space of the former concentration camp (Memorial complex „12th February”), you will experience one of the darkest periods of world history. Visiting the main camp building and the cells, you will hear numerous stories about suffering but also about the courage and indestructibility of the human spirit.
Bubanj Hill, 3 km from the city center, was the site of mass executions of prisoners from the concentration camp in Niš during the Second World War. The “Three Fists” monument, 16, 14 and 12 m high, symbolizing a man, a woman and a child.
